A Davao City councilor yesterday lauded the Supreme Court for its move to strengthen the drive against environmental violators by designating local courts to act as “environmental courts.”

Floor leader Bonifacio Militar said the environmental courts also called green courts would give teeth to local resolutions and ordinances addressing environmental violations.

In a December resolution the Supreme Court designated the local courts like the Regional Trial Court to handle cases involving environmental violations in order to fast-tract their resolution.

The Supreme Court should be congratulated for this move that would strengthen government campaign against environmental violations, said Militar.

He said the High Court resolution would be a big boast to local legislation needing strong legal support in its implementation against violators.

Militar noted that the Davao City Council had passed landmark legislations aiming to preserve the environment like the Watershed Code, the Water Resources Code, the Marine Protected Areas Code and the local legislation supporting the Clean Air Act.

Militar said these landmark legislations are in support of efforts to preserve, conserve and manage local natural resources and current initiatives to arrest global warming.
