COMVAL UNDER STATE OF CALAMITY

The Compostela Valley Provincial Board has passed a resolution declaring the entire province under a state of calamity.

The approval last week of the resolution paves the way for Governor Arturo “Chiongkee” Uy to set aside funds for emergency assistance to thousands affected by massive floods that hit several municipalities and for rehabilitation of destroyed roads and bridges.

The series of floods displaced thousands, destroyed roads and bridges and millions of pesos worth of crops, according to the Office of Civil Defense regional office which identified Compostela Valley as the worst-hit province. The rains also led to serious land movement in Mt. Diwata in Monkayo that forced the evacuation of residents from 3 villages in the mining barangay.

Governor Uy during the Monday convocation at the Capitol last week before provincial employees, expressed sadness at the natural calamity, and asked them to lock arms and support government programs to put the province back into shape and urged the cooperation of all. He said eleven barangays have suffered serious damages in the week-long massive rains.

Earlier before the provincial board resolution, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council during an emergency meeting also passed a resolution confirming the province as under a state of  calamity.
