COMMENTARY
An estimated 5,000 people gathered at the Rizal Park in Davao City on July 26, 2011, in what is touted as a massive rally of indignation against summary executions in the Davao Region, according to the Commission on Human Rights in region eleven which spearheaded the mass action.
The rally was preceded by a march through the city’s main streets participated by students, religious, the public, members of the police and the military and representatives from some government agencies and of course, Atty. Alberto Sipaco, head of the CHR in Region Eleven.
Sipaco and those who supported the so-called indignation rally belong to the other side of the fence. Yet to heard and seen in a rally of such magnitude are those from the other side, who believe, right or wrong, that the summary killings of criminals is a necessary evil amid inability by law enforcers to curb criminality and a justice system that could not send demons in human form to jail. If another rally that we may call a ‘rally of appreciation’ is held and joined by those from the other side of the fence is held, we expect that the crowd Sipaco gathered at the Rizal Park would pale in comparison.
