Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has shot down a proposal by City Councilor Pilar Braga to make the entire city a Wi-Fi zone for the reason of money.
The premature death came at the Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa television program on ABS/CBN, when Duterte said the Braga proposal was good but asked “do we have the money for it?”
Braga, chair of the Davao City Council committee on energy, transportation and telecommunication, had proposed that the city be declared by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) as internet fidelity (Wi-Fi) zone.
The proposal was approved on first reading by the legislative body recently.
Declaring the city Wi-Fi zone would be a boon to those using land-based or broadband services to access the Internet.
But it could also mean instant death to hundreds of small time internet cafes operating in the city.
Duterte said the Braga proposal would make Davao City to be declared as Wi-Fi zone but financial considerations demand the project be put off to the future.
